Driveline leaks deserve attention beyond the fluid level alone. On axle designs where a wheel-end seal separates differential oil from the brake assembly, a failed seal can eventually move lubricant into the backing-plate and friction-material area. At that point the repair involves more than stopping the leak, because gear oil reaching the brake assembly can leave braking components contaminated even after the axle seal itself has been replaced.
